Shawn Neary, bassist of Minneapolis based experimental indie-rock band Cloud Cult, cues us in on hot locales in his hometown:
Minneapolis Whoa!
1.) Minnehaha Park It’s on the city’s south border, and it has a waterfall. A big, thundering waterfall that freezes mid-flow in the winter. There’s also a trail at the base of the falls that leads to the Mighty Mississippi. Combine this with a little restaurant selling line-out-the-door-inducing tilapia tacos and bicycles built for two all over the place and you have a pretty good picture of the place.
2.) Bedlam Theatre My friends Andy and Karen play here every Wednesday night. Andy plays the saw, Karen plays the accordion. It’s such a good place to go, provided you get there early enough to be in the same room as the band- more and more folks are coming out with spring finally visiting us.
3.) Riverview Theater The Riverview is a different type of theater entirely- it’s the best-appointed theater in the Twin Cities, second-run or otherwise. It was built in the fifties, still charges fifties prices, and has the best buttered popcorn ever.
4.) Cedar Lake There are four lakes in the middle of the city, each with a different character. Harriet’s family-style, Calhoun is foe those who want to see and be seen- while jogging, Isles is jaw-droppingly ostentatious, and Cedar is the lake with the pines.
5.) The Quaking Bog It’s not far from Cedar Lake, and it’s a beautiful place with a name that should have been used in the Princess Bride.
Cloud Cult's brand new album, Feel Good Ghosts (Tea-Partying Through Tornadoes), is out now via Earthology Records.
